Mar 05, 2015  Xojo 2015 R1 did start. It may be purely coincidental but I thought it might be worth a warning that if you like to live on the bleeding edge of betas, make sure you have a decent backup. I've rolled back to the developer beta and everything is back to normal again. As time marches on, some older features of Xojo may no longer be relevant, may be unsupported by the OS or may be replaced with a newer feature. In such cases, the Xojo feature will be marked as De-emphasized, Deprecated and then finally removed. 2015 Release 1. Deprecations Removals TargetHasGUI, TargetPPC, TargetPowerPC.

The Formatted Text Control (FTC) is a canvas based control for Xojo that implements word processor capabilities similar to Apple Pages or Microsoft Word. The FTC is a canvas (technically Text Input Canvas) based control for Xojo that allows you to instantly add word processing capabilities to your applications. The FTC supports Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows. The FTC is completely written in Xojo.FTC Features:

  • Shift Down Arrow can now select the last line of the document
  • Arrow keys now fire the ChangeInsertionPoint event
  • Fixed drawing issue with cursor drawing in the wrong spot in the first paragraph when there’s a Space Before Paragraph

Minimum Requirements

The FTC is supported for latest Xojo release and one release back. It’s possible it will work in later versions but that is unsupported.

The FTC provides the infrastructure for spell checking, but does not provide the actual spell checking software. The FTC demo uses the BKS Spell Checker plugin as the base spell checker and may be purchased separately. You may use any spell checking software you like with the FTC.

If you want to run the optional regression test suite in the FTC demo application, you will need the “MBS REALbasic ComputerControl Plugin.”

A: I got tired of the difficulties of getting files back and forth between myself and my non-technical clients once they become too large for email. Training these people to use FTP or Dropbox was a challenge. I wanted something simple that I could use on my own website, so I created a simple index.php page that solved my problem. I later realized that others could benefit from this functionality, so I decided to port it to my favorite website platform; WordPress. The accordion is an instrument that has been on our 'to do' list for quite some time. The instrument can provide you with a very nice 'couleur locale' whenever you need to give a song that French twist. The accordion brings a breath of fresh air and evokes feelings of romance, passion and nostalgia.
As with other Sonokinetic instruments, we focused on getting a 'real' sound instead of a 'perfect' sound, as you can hear from the demo tracks skilfully created by our demo composers. We are very proud of the finished product and believe that it will empower lots of people to make MIDI recorded accordion tracks that sound like they were played under a bridge along the river Seine.
We started by recording all tones the instrument made, in all registers. For the basses side we captured samples with and without the extra low octave. We also recorded short attack notes for all the basses, at different velocities.
Then of course came the challenge of making all of this accessible from a master keyboard, and that's when we realised how ergonomically ingenious a real accordion actually is. The way the instrument is laid out allows for a great deal of flexibility, allowing you to play all kinds of chords with just one button in the left-hand section, and switching between bass notes along the cycle of fifths really easily. This method of playing explains the often quite complex and challenging patterns played with apparent ease by even mediocre accordion players. Making these patterns accessible to keyboard players would demand more than just mapping the recorded sounds to the keys, so we've integrated a sequencer into the Sonokinetic Accordion. The sequencer allows you to make full use of all the playing styles of a real accordion and do so very intuitively. The Kontakt script has a built in chord analyser, so it will automatically choose the right button sample for the chord you play. If you have the sequencer active, it will play one of the preset patterns, or you can program your own, using the interface.

The Interface
The main user interface for Accordion is designed to closely mimic the functions and key layout of a real-life piano accordion. The upper half of the interface contains all of the controls for tempo-synced sequencer programming, volume and reverb. The lower half has controls for choosing different registers, key and button noises. There are several keyswitches that control the sequencer and registers.
The Instrument
Before we look at the functions of Sonokinetic Accordion it's useful to know a little about how a real-life accordion is played. This will allow you get the most out of the instrument and help to make your 'accordion' performance more realistic.
An accordion of this type is usually worn around the player's neck, positioned in front of his chest. His two arms will grip either side of the accordion and squeeze and release to push air through the bellows and reeds. This creates the accordion's characteristic pumping sound.

The player's right and left hands have very different functions: The right hand will normally play a melody on a piano style keyboard. Above this keyboard there are 'register' buttons, which create a particular tone by utilising different sets of reeds. The left hand will perform bass notes and chords on a rank of buttons. Sonokinetic Accordion is controlled in a very similar way. The Kontakt keyboard is split into right and left hand playable ranges indicated by the blue keys.

The Periodic Table of Typefaces is obviously in the style of all the thousands of over-sized Periodic Table of Elements posters hanging in schools and homes around the world. This particular table lists 100 of the most popular, influential and notorious typefaces today.
As with traditional periodic tables, this table presents the subject matter grouped categorically. The Table of Typefaces groups by families and classes of typefaces: sans-serif, serif, script, blackletter, glyphic, display, grotesque, realist, didone, garalde, geometric, humanist, slab-serif and mixed.
Each cnd a ranking of 1 through 100.
Ranking was determined by statistically sorting and combining lists and opinions from the the sites listed below. The final overall ranking was achieved depending on how many lists the particular typeface was presented on and it's ranking on the lists (if the particular source list used a ranking system; some did not, in which case just the typeface's presence on the list boosted it's overall score.) After averaging the typefaces appearances and rankings a composite score was given and the list was sorted on a spreadsheet then finally given an overall score of 1 through 100 based on its final resting position.
Unfortunately, the typefaces could not be sorted exactly numerically on the table while at the same time keeping them in groups of families and classes. It had to be one or the other. Of course it COULD have been done but I would have had to seriously sacrifice aesthetics of the overall design (i.e. it wouldn't have come out looking AT ALL like a traditional periodic table.) However, upon close inspection, you find that at least the typefaces are ordered within their family/class groupings.
